From 1800-1830, buttons were usually plain and later engraved. The best ones were
burnished before gilding and again lightly afterwards. The Americans experienced
great difficulty with their gilding. At first, only managing to produce an inferior
color compared to the British, even though they used more gold than their rivals.
Eventually the problem was solved by sending agents over to Birmingham to bribe
the British workers to reveal the secret. 7/16" diameter.

Legendary king of Britain, reigning at CAMELOT, Arthur proves a mighty and noble
king. He possesses the great sword, EXCALIBUR, given to him by the mysterious
LADY OF THE LAKE. His enemies include his nephew, who fatally wounds him. The
dying king is borne away to AVALON, whence he will someday return. Among the knights
in Arthur's court are SIR LANCELOT and SIR TRISTRAM, both involved in illicit
and tragic unions.

1496-1542, DeSoto was a Spanish explorer of central and southeast North America.
He was the leader of the first white expedition to explore the Mississippi River.
He came in hopes of finding rich settlements to plunder, but found only hostile
Indians. He died before completing the journey and was buried in the river the
Spaniards called the "Rio Grande".

Kate Greenaway, born at Hoxton, England, March 17th, 1846, was the daughter of
a prominent wood engraver. She loved to help her father when she was a child,
drew pictures on her slate when very young and began to study art at 11 years
of age. Her first exhibit was held at The Dudley Galleries in England in 1868.
Her drawings of child life became very popular and her style was widely imitated.
One of her most successful books for children was "Under the Window".
