MERCURY. In Roman mythology, god of commerce and messenger of the gods; identified
with the Greek, HERMES. He is sometimes seen carrying his CADUSEUS, a staff entwined
with serpents. Mercury found two serpents in combat. He tried to place his wand
between them. The serpents stopped fighting and coiled themselves around the staff.
Thus, the origin of the Caduseus.
