An Englishman, Richard Prosser, patented a process for making porcelain buttons
from dry china clay powder in 1840. The French firm of Jean Felix Bapterosse
dominated world markets for utilitarian china buttons from the 1850's. It
was widely believed that Bapterosse had learned the secrets of mass producing
china buttons while employed at an English factory and had returned to France,
and with the help of French government funds, had set up a factory that was
capable of turning out china buttons at half the cost of the English ones.

Fashionable during the 1870's, carved, pierced and engraved pearl buttons
were as highly regarded as their counterpart in jewelry. The texture of pearl
shell is not uniform and this gives it its attractive iridescent coloring
that even to this day cannot be reproduced by mechanical means.
