HECTOR, son of PRIAM, king of TROY, braves warrior among the Trojans. He killed PARTOCLUS, dearest friend of ACHILLES who vowed to avenge his death, and did so. He stripped Hector's body of its armor, pierced the heels and tied it with a thong to the back of his chariot. Then he drove his team round and round the walls of Troy, dragging the body behind him. This desecration angered gods and mortals alike and ZEUS intervened to stop it. He had HERMES persuade the old king, Priam, to go to the camp of the Greeks and beg Achilles to give up his son's body.

NEPTUNE (POSEIDON), SEA GOD. An old Italian deity, identified with the Greek God of the sea. NEPTUNALIEA is celebrated on July 23 in his honor. Neptune had a wonderful palace in the depths of the sea where he lived with his beautiful wife, AMPHITRITE, and from which he ruled over his vast realm. His son, TITON, announced his father's commands to all parts of the ocean. Neptune was often seen riding the waves of an angry ocean with TRIDENT, the symbol of power, in his hand, calming the high waves. It was he who invented the horse in contest with Minerva.

Playing the HEYNAL, an ancient hymn to the Holy Mother, played every hour from the tower of the Church of St. Mary in Cracow. The playing of the Heynal was a very old tradition. The trumpeter was also watchman who signaled with a lantern or a flag if he observed danger from his high vantage point. during the Tartar invasion of Poland in the 13th century, the trumpeter was killed by an arrow as he played the Heynal, and afterwards, to commemorate him, the hymn was ended abruptly, just as the young trumpeter's had been centuries before. The tradition had been suspended during the Nazi occupation, but restored after the war.

From the commedia dell'arte which flourished throughout Europe from the 16th to the 18th century, at which time the Harlequin evolved into a gay, teasing character usually coming off second best in amorous escapades.

This button is an example of the exquisite work of this period. The Harlequin is in detailed, sculptured brass and applied as an escutcheon to a reticulated steel back surrounded by an embroidered separate inner border within an outer border of faceted steel pyrites individually set. SOLD

A Grimm's Fairy Tale, made into an opera by Engelbert Humperdinck with libretto written by Adelheid Wette. Hansel and Gretel were sent into the woods by their cross stepmother and told to gather berries. The button pictures them beside the brook which they could not cross, and Gretel is begging the ducks to take them across on their backs. In the opera she says: "Oh, there are some ducks. Perhaps they will carry us across.". So she sings: "Hansel and Gretel here we stand. Will you take us over on your back to land?"

From a fairy story by the Brothers Grimm. This wicked dwarf helps the young queen carry out a deception which had led the king to marry her. In payment he demands that the queen guess his name in a certain length of time or give him her beautiful baby boy. On the last day she discovers the name and frees herself.
