Silver Luster was the discovery of the Staffordshire potters. If real silver were used it would tarnish and the necessary polishing would soon wear off. So Platinum was the metal used for the bright, untarnishing silver luster, a metal first known in 1750. The especially silvery luster is sometimes referred to as Tiffany Luster. The use of luster on buttons dates back to the middle of the 1800's.
