Item #: cudes11. Buttons: The Trumpeter of Cracow, playing the Heynal, an ancient hymn to the Holy Mother, played every hour from the tower of the Church of St. Mary in Cracow. The playing of the Heynal was a very old tradition.

The trumpeter was also watchman who signaled with a lantern or a flag if he observed danger from his high vantage point. During the Tartar invasion of Poland in the 13th century, the trumpeter was killed by an arrow as he played the heynal, and afterwards, to commemorate him, the hymn was ended abruptly, just as the young trumpeter's had been centuries before.

The tradition had been suspended during the Nazi occupation but restored after this war.
