Item #: cufrenc. Buttons: 7/8" diameter. Circa 1852-1870. France, Second Empire. Household Corps, Cent Guarde, Maison Militaire De L'Empereur. Worn during the period of 1852-1870. Napoleon III. After several attempts to the throne, the Revolution in 1848 led to his election as President and later an imperial title. His rule was marked by the suppression of the press, the Crimean War, and the war with Austria, in which Sardinia and France won the battles of Margenta and Solferino. He established the Archduke Maximilian on the new imperial throne of Mexico during the civil war, despite the protest of the U.S. Government.

Item #: cuwkc50. Buttons: 3/4" diameter. Work Clothes buttons of the early 1900's. They are reminders of an era of long working hours, with no overtime pay, no sick pay or unemployment compensation and few retirement benefits. Folks worked hard and were proud of it, and the makers of their work clothes were proud of their product, and said so in slogans on the buttons. The trademarks were associated with strength, toughness, obstinacy, or leadership qualities. The backs of the work clothes buttons are of tinned steel, which was actually made out of tin plate obtained from discarded tin cans up to about the First World War.
