THE FIRST GASOLINE AUTOMOBILE, the Panhard car, was designed by Krebs, but the
motor car is not the product of a single man's invention; neither was the achievement
accomplished within a single century. Many of the earliest automobiles, very much
resembling the horseless carriages that they were expected to replace, were made
in Europe. Likewise, many of he buttons with automobile designs came from Europe.
Henry Ford completed his first successful horseless carriage in 1896. Buttons
such as depicted here were made to be worn on linen "dusters".

Kao-Yao was obliged to leave his
home and family to defend his country. Before
he left, he trained his dogs to guard the home, and extracted a promise
from
each that he would never let a stranger enter the gates. He was away for many
years, and when he returned he
was greatly altered in appearance. As he reached
his home and was about to enter, the dogs set upon him and savaged
him. As he
lay dying, he told his family not to punish the dogs, for they had only obeyed
his order:
"The force man creates can never be recalled".
