ANIMAL designs were
made not only for sporting garments, but for children and
ladies' clothing
as well. Dogs, cats and rabbits have always appealed to
youngsters, but there were fashions for women's wear
also-not
only the more likely subject, such as horses or birds, but
such unexpected creatures as snakes, frogs and lizards and
eve
flied, spiders, beetles and bats, all supposedly repugnant
to the human female. Even rats and mice appear on Victorian
buttons.

Riding as a skilled sport developed in medieval times and
now includes diverse styles. Horse shows, which originated
(1864) in Ireland, test riding skills in such events as
hunting, jumping and dressage. Equestrian competition is part
of the Olympics. Until recently horses were widely used for
warfare, agriculture and transportation and were a very
important part of the life style of the 1800's.

SPORTING buttons date from the 18th century, but most were
made during the 19th century for garments especially
fashioned for sportswear. For example, men and women would
wear garments designed for bicycles. Other designs depicted
such sports as hunting, golf, tennis, boxing, fishing. Many
were made in sets from five to as many as eighteen
buttons.
